Based on Joe Hill’s short story, “The Black Phone,” is about a shy 13-year-old boy who is kidnapped by a sadistic killer (Ethan Hawke). He throws him into a basement with a broken phone hanging on the wall. The phone rings and the boy communicates with other victims.
After several TV projects, Scott Derrickson’s The Black Phone is the second feature film based on Joe Hill’s work. It expands on a story and adds a lot to its theatrical appeal. This film was always more commercial than the 2013 adaptation Horns. However, the picture does a nice job of blending in with current trends in retro-set genre fare. It lightly scratches a nostalgia itch while not trying to ride Stranger Things’ coattails. Hill’s father and Stranger inspired Stephen King, although this story could easily be his.
Finney (Mason Thames) is a 1978 Denver baseball player. His “arm’s mint” (an opponent declares it) doesn’t stop him from being bullied between classes. Finney is a jock who walks around life looking like a dweeb. Even his little sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) sometimes has to save him. He is a victim of the Grabber, a local killer who has taken his two children from him. His timidity comes surely from living with Jeremy Davies, a sad-angry, alcoholic dad.
