Gerard Butler returns to the big screen in Kandahar (formerly Mission Kandahar), a thrilling action film directed by Ric Roman Waugh. The story revolves around Tom Harris (played by Butler), an undercover CIA operative caught deep in the dangerous territory of Afghanistan. When his true identity and mission are compromised, Tom must fight his way out alongside his translator, Mohammad “Mo” Doud (Negahban), as they race against the clock to reach the extraction point in Kandahar. Hot on their trail are elite special forces, adding an extra layer of tension. While Kandahar may not be the most outstanding film in Butler’s or Waugh’s careers, their involvement brings an elevated touch to this solid and enjoyable action thriller.
Butler’s portrayal of Tom goes beyond the surface, injecting more emotion and depth into the character. He captivates audiences and makes them genuinely care about Tom, as only a seasoned action star can do. Negahban’s performance as Mo is equally impressive, portraying a compelling character with a tragic storyline. The chemistry between Butler and Negahban is palpable, lending authenticity to their friendship and the bond they forge, which is beautifully depicted in heartfelt and surprisingly emotional scenes. Fimmel shines as Roman Chalmers, infusing the character with a cocky energy and likable charisma that steals the spotlight.
The action sequences are well-executed and highly entertaining, building up to a thrilling climax that leaves a lasting impact. However, Kandahar falls short in delivering the expected thrills, tension, and excitement that a film of this kind should evoke. The first act tends to drag and becomes somewhat convoluted, introducing unnecessary story elements and characters that ultimately serve little purpose. With a runtime of two hours, the film manages to maintain a decent pace, although it could have benefited from either a shorter duration or more exploration of the relationship between Tom and Mo.
Despite its flaws, Kandahar remains an enjoyable action thriller, particularly for fans of the genre. While it doesn’t redefine the conventions or introduce groundbreaking elements, it offers a satisfying cinematic experience.
