About My Father is a run-of-the-mill culture clash comedy that struggles to distinguish itself within its genre. The story revolves around Sebastian’s desire to propose to his fiancĂ©e, which hinges on gaining his father’s approval. Their visit to Ellie’s affluent family during the 4th of July weekend sets the stage for comedic clashes between their working-class background and Ellie’s privileged lifestyle. Unfortunately, the humor largely falls flat, and the characters lack depth, appearing as one-dimensional stereotypes. The only saving grace of the film is the chemistry between Sebastian Maniscalco and Robert De Niro, but even their performances can only do so much to elevate the lackluster material. With a predictable plot and uninspiring writing, About My Father fails to leave a lasting impression, ultimately becoming just another forgettable addition to the genre. Visit afdah for more!
